Marion City Schools now offers an FFA and Agricultural Business program here at Harding High School. The teaching position was posted last spring by the career pathway team.
Ms.Loxley first heard of the position from Mrs.Pace, and Ms. Loxley decided that this was the position she wanted because she wanted to teach students about agriculture. The high tone greenhouse went up in August, and the plots went up in June.
Students can get involved by simply joining the program at Harding. Students involved in Ms.Loxley’s class learn to grow their own vegetables and sell them once they are all done.
The benefits to having the greenhouses and the plots are students and the community get to work together growing crops and learning how they grow and what they need to grow. In a greenhouse, growers can supplement sunlight with LEDs, allowing plants to grow faster and stronger. Everyone in the community is sharing the greenhouse with the FFA and the agriculture Business program.
Greenhouse growers also use significantly less water as system water can be filtered and reused within the operation rather than simply being discharged into the ground.
Ms.Loxley uses the money they raise for the FFA so students can go to conventions to learn more about agriculture.
