Crystal Pratt was our first hall monitor hired this school year. The Herald was able to sit down with her to talk about how she came to be here and how things have been. Here’s what she had to say.
How did you hear about this position and why did you decide to apply for it?
Some of my teacher friends mentioned it to me. I run the afterschool program at Grant. I do this job and then go to Grant. My main goal is to do extra work to save money to go back to school. I am working on my teacher licensure, but with kids at home, I have to keep working.
What kind of after-school program is it?
The program is meant for homework help, extra tutoring, and doing fun things like painting, crafts, and games. We partner with artists, the Y, and even YOGA instructors.
How has it been so far?
My first week was overwhelming to say the least. I couldn’t believe how many people were in the hall, and they just didn’t care. Things have gotten so much better though.
What has been the best thing that has happened?
I am really getting to know kids. I think it took some time for them to stop seeing me as someone who wants to get in trouble, and now I am building good relationships.
What kind of feedback are you getting from administrators?
“Keep up the good work.” I actually hear from teachers frequently that things are getting better, so I know I am making a difference.
Will you be around next year or is this position temporary?
Right now it’s temporary. They want to see how things would go this year and then make that determination in the spring.
Check back next month as we sit down with our second hall monitor.
