The pumpkin spice latte was invented in 2003. It was the drink that almost wasn’t.
Peter Dukes along with a team at Starbucks began to test out new fall signature flavors. Through trial and error the team eventually came up with a new combination of a bunch of different ingredients. These ingredients include milk, pumpkin sauce, brewed espresso, whipped cream and pumpkin spice topping. When they tasted it, they knew they were onto something.
In fall of 2003 the pumpkin spice latte debuted in 100 stores in Vancouver and Washington DC. The drink took off, becoming a signature fall drink.
It is estimated that the drink brings in 100 million dollars in revenue to Starbucks every year. Since 2003, over 600 million pumpkin spice lattes have been sold worldwide. Nearly 20 million pumpkin lattes are sold every year at Starbucks.
The drink is still insanely popular 19 years later and many claim it’s a signature fall drink.
