What Happened to the Courtyard?

pattyforeman87

The courtyard at Harding has a history that dates back to the days when the school was located at what is now Grant. According to Mrs. Bebout, an assistant principal at Harding, back when Harding was in the Grant building, the courtyard was a bustling space with students using it to move from class to class faster than they could using the halls. However since Harding moved to the new building, the courtyard has barely been used. One may wonder why the courtyard is rarely used anymore. According to Mrs. Bebout, there are many reasons. One of the main reasons is the layout of it. At Grant, the doors were at each corner which allows you to quickly cut across to where you need to go. However at Harding, this is not the case, the doors to the courtyard are separated by a long and winding path. This means that it’d take about the same amount of time to walk through compared to the halls, however it could help reduce congestion in the halls There is still potential in the courtyard however; Mrs. Bebout believes that with minimal changes and proper supervision, the courtyard could become a valuable asset to Harding once again. One of her ideas is to encourage classes to go out and spend a class in the courtyard, and as said before, encouraging students to use the courtyard to move between classes can reduce congestion in the halls. The courtyard was originally set up well for various uses, and with a bit of planning and creativity, it could regain its former vibrancy and become a hub of activity at Harding once more.
