Recently one of our teachers at Harding, Mr. Mullins, got COVID and I had the opportunity to ask him a few questions.
He first went to the emergency room because he wasn’t able to swallow and the doctors tested him for COVID. He ended up having strep throat and COVID. After that he was sent home to quarantine but the next day he wasn’t able to get out of bed for two days and he has no recollection of what happened.
The doctors had him stay at the hospital for a week hooked up to an oxygen concentrator to monitor his oxygen levels. While in the hospital he was hooked up to about a 10ft hose to get oxygen and on the other side an IV in his arm for treatment.
He also had to have blood thinners and then have blood drawn everyday, “So you're constantly being….. If you did get a chance to fall asleep, they’d wake you up and poke ya”. Mullins was staying in the covid ward, completely isolated from people except from the hospital staff. “You felt like you're almost a prisoner because the only people that could come in were the nurses. Now, they were all very professional and very nice and I think that they did a nice job but just… it was not, it wasn't pleasant”.
The first week he got home the doctors had him carry around an oximeter, used for checking oxygen levels in blood, and he had to check it every hour. His oxygen levels were getting better after he got home so he was able to stop using the oximeter and getting oxygen. It wasn't COVID itself that did the most harm but the lingering effects.
Mullins’ sister also had COVID before him and was in about the same condition he was in, near death. He believes that COVID has been muddled by the media and politics, “I know people on both sides of the issue and stuff and I said… ya know, here's what I’ve come to, my recommendation. Listen to your doctor. Don't listen to social media. Don't listen to the news. Go to a doctor and if they say you need a booster, get the booster”.
