Thunder Fury Comics is a locally owned and operated store by Matt, Justin and Micheal (Mikey) who grew up in Marion and wanted to do something new for the community. “We are excited to bring some kind of unique shop, kinda help for lack of better with the nerd culture type stores” said Matt, one of the owners.
Thunder Fury Comics originally was located in the mall, however they recently moved into downtown Marion. “was partnered with someone else before…some creative differences, just wanted to come downtown to where we could redo everything down here…just seemed like the move” said Matt.
The right move that it was, Micheal, owner alongside Justin and Matt, says “...part of being downtown now we get to be a part of that Downtown Marion Inc and Second Saturdays and all these cool different events that we never would have had the opportunity before.” Being downtown has also created more community around the store and given it better business. “Most of the community was great when they came in, and having a nice community that we've already established and being seen more with the new location I think that was great too” said Micheal.
Other than the events downtown Marion holds, Thunder Fury also holds its own free events. “We do Fight Night Fridays” explained Micheal “anything from Mario Cart to Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, even wrestling, we usually do some board games on saturdays.”
Thunder Fury Comics does more than just events, comics is in their name after all. They sell comics, Pop Funko figures, old games, paintings, Pop Funko photos, and much more.
The paintings and photos are done by Dyland Pancake. “...and yes that is his real last name” said Matt “we’ve had his art through the store since the beginning.” They also have over eleven hundred Funko’s and over twenty thousand comics! Thunder Fury also mods systems by request, usually on request of nostalgia, so go on in and ask about it!
Thunder Fury always welcomes its customers with open arms, they want to feel like one big family for the community. “It's just more or less the fact of having that friendship and what feels like a family… And I think another thing is bringing people together” says Micheal. “ it’s just working in a place where you get to meet all sorts of new people everyday…seeing those regulars come in and building those relationships.” Micheal says that this is one of the biggest passions that lead him to where he is today.
However, doing something like opening a business is always a risk. “...not being scared to try something outside your comfort zone, cause I won’t lie it was that first step it was pretty scary” said Micheal “[but] then everything just kinda falls into place.”
Thunder Fury is located at 131 West Center Street here in Marion Ohio, and is open from 11am till 9pm Monday through Saturday, and is closed on Sundays. Thunder Fury currently does not hire, three owners being more than enough. “We are excited to bring some kind of unique shop, kinda help…with the nerd culture type stores” said Matt.
